The Basic Makeup Brush Set: Which brushes do you really need?
With all the makeup brushes available out there…choosing the right brushes for your personal makeup kit can be very intimidating. I’ve put together a basic brush kit to help you select the right ones.
My favourite brush brands are M.A.C, Stila, Nars and Shu Uemura. They all use high quality fibres that deliver excellent makeup application. If you invest in great quality brushes and care for them correctly, they can last you a lifetime. Stay tuned for my post on correct brush care.
I’ve given each brush a star rating to show importance even though I have already whittled the brushes down to only the basics.
☆ not important ☆☆☆☆☆ very necessary
1. Powder/Blush Brush
Used to apply face powder or powdered blush.
☆☆☆☆☆ You definitely need this one!
2. Duo Fibre Face Brush
Used for a lighter application of powdered, liquid and cream cosmetics (ie. foundation and cheek products.)
☆☆☆☆ Not the end of the world if you don’t have it, but it’s a ‘goody’ to save for.
3. Angled Contour Brush
Used for the application of powdered products to blend and contour. I also like to use this for cream blush application.
☆☆☆ This brush is great for contouring and is used by most pro makeup artists. If you like a bit of contouring, you need it!
4. Foundation Brush
For application of cream or liquid foundations. You can also use to apply creams, lotions and cream cheek colour.
☆☆☆☆☆ Many Foundations come with brushes these days. You might be a fan of the makeup sponge or using your finger tips. This is such a useful and versatile brush, I highly recommend it.

5. Concealer Brush
For application of Concealer
☆☆☆ This brush is great if you have problem skin, it allows more precise application of concealer on blemishes, but you don’t really need it. You can also try cotton buds to apply concealer on spots if you are on a budget.
6. Shadow Blending Brush
For light application of shadow over the whole lid and for blending shadows gently.
☆☆☆☆☆ This is my favourite brush for all over shadow application. Love! Need!
7. Eye Shadow Brush
A basic brush for Eye shadow application and blending.
☆☆☆☆☆ Another important brush, necessary for a more intense application of shadow colour.
8. Angled Shading Brush
For precise application and blending of Eye shadow
☆☆☆ Not that necessary unless you really know how to work with brushes and eyeshadow.
9. Pencil Brush
Another brush for precision blending and defining the eye-crease. I use this one to apply shadow under the eye or blend out a soft black eye liner for the smokey eye look.
☆☆☆☆ I love this brush and use it all the time. If you only apply basic shadow to your eyes, you won’t need it.
10. Eye Liner brush
For the application of all types of eye liner.
☆☆ Most liquid liners have their own brush so this is only necessary if you use cream liners out of the pot.
11. Lip Brush
For the application of all lip products
☆☆☆☆☆ Every girl needs a lip brush!!!! What are you going to use to get that red lip just perfect?!
Let me know if you have any questions…
